Post Pre Post Painterly Series
In my Post Pre Post Painterly series masking tape is used as a symbol of Post-Painterly Abstraction by referencing its use as a painterly tool. The title comes from a play on the term post-painterly that Clement Greenberg coined to describe a hard-edged, non-gestural style of painting, of which, masking tape was often utilized to create straight lines and geometric shapes. I use a trompe-l'œil technique to create uncanny representations of masking tape with acrylic paint, thus refiguring the remnants of modernist painting into new meanings.
